A copy of From Hell is not required, although this effect has been designed to be a perfect conclusion to a Jack the Ripper routine.
The story of Jack the Ripper, one of the most notorious serial killers in history, is shrouded in mystery and intrigue. While it is known that the killer operated in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888 and is believed to have murdered at least five women, his true identity has never been conclusively established.
Was Jack the Ripper a flesh and blood person, or something more otherworldly? How did he manage to evade capture? This routine will help your audience decide for themselves, but the outcome won't be pretty.
Using a pendulum, the Met Police's number one Ripper suspect is divined from a selection of high society East End criminals. He is then placed into a cell (the box)with two of London's finest constables. The Ripper suspect was considered so dangerous that he was placed in a cell with a large window to be observed at all times. This cell in the Shoreditch station was known as 'The Glass Prison' and was only used when 24-hour observation of a convict was required.
The spectator is asked to watch the cards through the glass window at all times.
In the morning, the cell was opened so the suspect could be transferred to The Old Baily.
The box is opened, and both Police cards are turned over to reveal they are covered in blood. The suspect card is then turned over to reveal a blank photograph. The Ripper murdered his captors in cold blood and mysteriously escaped, even though he was always observed throughout the performance.
In a second variation of the routine, the box containing the Ripper suspect and both Policemen is closed. On opening the box, the Ripper card is now on the opposite side of the glass and outside the box while the two policemen lay dead in the cell.
The Ripper card can also be made to disappear completely.
A pair of bloody and non-bloody police cards and two different Ripper suspects are provided so that you can tailor the routine to your audience.
