In 1631, René Descartes (famous for saying Cogito ergo sum, “I think, therefore I am”) expounded his notion of the two wise monkeys, or the wise monkey twins. Given enough time, Descartes proposed, two wise monkeys could predict the future in precise detail.  

The Two Wise Monkey bookends were originally produced in the late-nineteenth / early-twentieth century in honour of René Descartes. They represent his wise monkey twins, signifying Vita (Life) and Mors (Death), and suggest le dichotomie d'existence (the duality of Being). 

Not only will you soon have gorgeous Art Nouveau-era bookends to frame your collection of magic (or collectable) books, but with these bookends you also have a powerful and bewildering effect—or rather a stunning finale for any effect (not only books) where a genuinely randomised selection (not a force) is required or desired.  

Descartes spent years trying to decipher the so-called Euclidian Progression and found that at least part of the answer lay in the theories of Pythagoras.
